Consultation has concluded

We are excited to announce that the Township of South Stormont is undertaking a comprehensive Housing Needs Assessment. This important study aims to identify current and future housing challenges, gaps, and requirements within our community to ensure that we can meet the needs of our residents, both current and future.

What is a Housing Needs Assessment?

A Housing Needs Assessment is a strategic approach to understanding the housing market and demographic trends in our township. It involves collecting data on population growth, housing stock, affordability, and community preferences. It also involves clearly identifying issues and gaps with housing in the community, to spur discussion on potential solutions. The insights gained will help us make informed decisions about future housing policies, developments, and community services.

Why is it important?

  • Identifies housing gaps such as shortages of certain housing types, affordability concerns, as well as supply shortfalls (e.g. rentals).
  • Supports diverse needs by helping us work toward housing options that are available for all demographics, including seniors, families, and young professionals.
  • Guides development and land use decision-making to help foster more complete and inclusive residential developments and communities.

Will there be opportunities to participate?

Of course! There will be two primary ways to provide input on the Housing Needs Assessment over the coming weeks.

  1. Fill out a Housing Survey – Fill out one of the surveys below or drop by the Township office to fill out a paper survey. The survey will allow you to provide us with helpful feedback on the current state of housing, including issues and ideas for potential solutions.
  2. Participate in one of two Housing Workshop Sessions – there will be two housing workshops held on June 19th, 2024 at the Township Office in the council chambers. These workshops will focus on roundtable group discussions to talk about the current state of housing, challenges faced by different groups in our community, potential solutions, and ideas for how to build a stronger housing environment in the future.
  3. Workshop 1 – Wednesday, June 19th, 2:00PM to 4:00PM
    • This workshop will be open to housing-related stakeholders, organizations, and developers on an invitational basis.
  4. Workshop 2 – Wednesday, June 19th, 6:00PM to 8:00PM
    • This workshop will be open to the public. No registration is necessary, but we would appreciate if you could let us know ahead of time if you plan on attending!

We encourage anyone who lives, works, builds, develops, or plays in the Township to consider participating. No one knows your community’s needs better than you - your input will help us build a more complete picture of our township’s housing needs and how we can address them.
